Information/FAQs
How do I know I need counselling?
Knowing if you need counselling can depend on a few key signs. Here are some things to consider:

-
If you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions or situations in your life, it might be helpful to talk to someone.
-
If you feel sad, anxious, or hopeless most of the time, and these feelings don’t seem to go away, counselling could be beneficial.
-
If you’re struggling to cope with a major life change, such as a loss, a breakup, or a new job, a counsellor can help you navigate these challenges.
-
If your emotional or mental state is affecting our ability to function in daily life, such as at work, school, or in relationships, it might be time to seek help.
-
If you’ve experienced trauma, such as abuse, an accident, or a significant loss, counselling can provide a safe space to process these events
-
If you’re having ongoing problems in your relationships, whether with family, friends or a partner, a counsellor can help you work through these issues.
Remember, seeking counselling is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s about taking care of your mental health, just like you would your physical health.

How Many Sessions will I get?
If we feel that Counselling is the most appropriate support for you at this time, you would be offered 10 counselling sessions, which take place at the same time and same place each week, with the same counsellor.
Can I have more or less sessions?

Together you and your counsellor may decide to have less than the 10 sessions offered, but we would always suggest making sure that this includes an ending session. It is not possible to have more than 10 sessions as we are a short-term service. Your counsellor would be able to discuss other options for you if you wanted more support afterwards.
Who is counselling for?

Children and young people with mild to moderate mental health needs who would benefit from a counselling approach. Counselling can help people who are feeling low, anxious or stressed to understand more about their feelings and make plans for how to feel better.
Where do counselling sessions take place?
At Brighton Youth Centre 94 Gloucester Road BN1 4AP
How long are the counselling sessions?
The session is for up to 50 minutes. Some people may feel that 30 to 40 minutes is a more suitable time. This can be discussed with your counsellor.
Can I bring my parent/carer into the counselling session?

The counselling session is just for you. (There may be times when you may like your parent/carer to pop into the start of the session and this would be ok.)
Do I need to bring anything to counselling?

You do not need to bring anything to the counselling session but if you would like to share something with your counsellor such as a photo or drawing. You are welcome to bring this along.

What happens when I refer myself to Thrive counselling service?
When we receive your referral counselling coordinator will assess your suitability.
If your referral is accepted, we will offer you an initial appointment.
This would be through sms text or email depends on how you would like to be contacted.
If you are referred by your parent or youth worker, we will send an acknowledgement email within 10 working days to let you know we have accepted your referral and will provide details of next steps.
If your referral is not accepted, we will write to you, or to your parent if they referred you. It may be that you’re better placed with a different service and type of treatment.
This first conversation helps us to learn what difficulties have led you to get in touch and gives us a chance to talk together about how we might be able to help. It is best to be in a quiet, private space when you are expecting our call.
If you and the therapist agree on a recommended course of treatment during your initial appointment, we will arrange next steps. We may need to phone you back, or write to you with an agreed final plan, but you will know at the end of your initial appointment what will happen next.
